Bubble Trouble
How to Control Baby's Gas
By Carma Haley Shoemaker
Once Baby has been relieved, parents will want to prevent the gas from reoccurring. According to Prachniak, tips t prevent gas include:
- If your breastfed baby seems bothered by a particular food that you are eating, do your best to avoid it.
- When bottle-feeding, be sure to use a nipple that is neither too big (which can cause Baby to eat too fast) nor too small (which can cause Baby to gulp air).
- Burp Baby every three to five minutes during feedings, or between breasts, to prevent gas build up and pain. (Most breastfed babies do not need to be burped, but some do. Watch for signs of discomfort, such as squirming and fidgeting.)
- Baby is sure to have a full tummy after feedings, so avoid jostling or vigorous playing for at least 20 minutes.
- Encourage quiet time after your baby eats, as it will help Baby's system to digest and prevent upset stomach and/or gas from developing.
- Avoid feeding your baby cow's milk, as it can cause gas.
