An Attraction to Fall For
Discover Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada

Speaking of allergies, in Canada you can buy candies made in a peanut-free factory. As most chocolate candy in the United States is made in factories where nuts are used as an ingredient, children who have nut allergies aren't able to eat chocolates. So whenever we are in Canada, we bring home a supply of candy for our young friends who otherwise wouldn't get a chocolate treat. The candies can be found in almost any gift shop and are labeled "peanut free."
Because of September 11, traveling between Canada and the United States has gotten a little more difficult. While you don't need a passport yet when driving to Canada, we took ours and we zipped right through the border without any hassles. Our friends had birth certificates and photo identification. They were asked a few more questions than we were. It can be a very long process to get back into the States (it took us over an hour to cross the bridge spanning the Niagara River). Getting into Canada is easier than getting back into the United States, it seemed.
There are plenty of side trips one can take from Niagara Falls. The drive along the river is beautiful, and there are a number of wineries and farmers' stands to visit. Niagara-on-the-Lake is on Lake Ontario, about a 30-minute drive from Niagara Falls. It is a restored Victorian town and home to the summer Shaw Theater Festival. Toronto is about an hour's drive from the Falls area, and Buffalo is very close. But for a weekend visit, Niagara Falls has plenty to do for the whole family.
