Penciling Your Family In

By Mary Dixon Weidler

Pages:  1  2  3  4

– Don't waste time beating yourself up about working all day. You've been providing for your family's needs, and they love you for it. Go reap the benefits!

  • Make Time for Your Wife – Seeing Mom and Dad happy together helps a child gain a strong sense of security. Children also need to see that Mom and Dad can disagree and still love one another.
  • Set Your Priorities – Remember that birthdays, soccer games and the second grade play are all important events.
  • Pencil Them in on Your Calendar – Give them the same attention you would a board meeting or executive lunch. Discuss your priorities with your employer, being candid about your need to do what's best for your family as well as your work.
  • Create Reconnection Rituals – Set aside time to reconnect with the family after a day at work. Make it routine to discuss class work, prepare dinner together or maybe even enjoy a video with the little ones. Focus just on the family during this time.

"If Dad is not keeping a good work/life balance, both he and the family lose," says Dr. Drake. So learn the pleasures of some family time each evening. Leave the phone off the hook, the computer offline and your briefcase in your car while you greet the kids at the end of a day.

After all, the best way – the only way – to give a hug is with your hands free.
