Taking Precautions
The NICHD recommends parents take the following precautions to help minimize SIDS risk factors:

  • Place infants to sleep on their backs – even at naptime.
  • Do not smoke around infants.
  • Do not smoke if you're pregnant.
  • Place infants on a firm mattress.
  • Remove soft, fluffy bedding and stuffed toys from infant's sleep area.
  • Keep blankets and other coverings away from the infant's nose and mouth.
  • Do not put too many layers of clothing or blankets on infants.
  • Make sure everyone who cares for an infant knows that infants should be placed on their backs to sleep.
