y out of a need for adequate sun protection for their children. "I have a medium skin tone, so I tend to tan easily," explains Dewey. "Here I was, with a fair-skinned, red-headed son who was extremely sun-sensitive. I was determined to find a way to really protect him the damage the sun can cause."

Now, as the co-owners of Solartex Sun Gear in Richmond, Va., they sell protective "C-Wear" sun suits and hats for babies and children. C-Wear clothing is made of a unique fabric called C-Tex™, which is a polyester blend that combines a special dyeing process and unique weave to provide complete sun protection, wet or dry. It was originally developed more than 10 years ago in Australia by a mother to protect her own children from the harsh effects of the sun.

Dewey and her partner weren't looking to get into retail, but they saw an important need that wasn't being met. "I was a practicing lawyer with two little kids looking for a way to ease my demanding schedule," remembers Dewey. At the time, she had a rapport with a Canadian distributor of C-Wear, as she was a regular customer. That distributor suggested she get into the C-Wear business in the United States, and the company was born. "It was the right idea at the right time," she says. "Plus, I knew that I wasn't the only mom out there worried about the damaging and long-term effects the sun has on young skin." And while Dewey still practices law part time, she and her partner, a pharmacist, have dedicated themselves to growing the company. "In the last year, we tripled our business," says Dewey. "I think the trend toward being proactive about sun protection is finally working its way from the West Coast to the rest of the country." She adds that the C-Wear brand has a good reputation, and that also helps bolster Solartex Sun Gear's exposure and sales. Solartex Sun Gear products can be found online at www.solartex.com
