Car Seats are Serious Business

  • Bring the seatbelt across the car seat and buckle as usual. Tighten the seatbelt as much as possible.
  • Firmly hold the shoulder and lap portions of the seatbelt together just behind the sliding latch plate and unbuckle the seatbelt.
  • Still holding the seatbelts together, weave the locking clip over both layers of seatbelt about half an inch from the sliding latch plate. (When you are done, you will see four metal 'legs" inlaid with the seatbelt.)
  • Re-buckle the seatbelt – it should still fit tightly.
  • Test for a secure installation by tugging hard on the lap portion of the seatbelt and by forcing the car seat from side to side and back and forth. If the lap seatbelt loosens, repeat these steps or install the car seat elsewhere in the car.

Contact your car dealer for advice if you feel you cannot secure the car seat satisfactorily.

Although the locking clip's assistance in gripping the seatbelt is important when restraining a car seat, it should never be used for a normally seated passenger

If you cannot find your locking clip or your seat was provided without one, ask first if they are sold at the store where you bought your car seat. Otherwise, they are available for purchase by mail from most car seat manufacturers and some automotive parts dealers for about each. Be sure not to confuse the metal locking clips with the convenience clips that are used to hold the shoulder portion of the seatbelt away from a shorter passenger's face and neck, as those will offer no protection in an accident.

United Automobile Insurance Group and Miami Children's Hospital Invite Britney Spears to Their Child Safety Seat Check Station for Lesson in Car Seat Safety

United Automobile Insurance Group is sending out an invitation for entertainer Britney Spears to come to South Florida and learn how to properly secure an infant in a car safety seat. The North Miami Beach, Florida-based property and casualty company is partnered with Miami Children's Hospital in Miami to provide one of the only indoor Child Safety Seat Check stations in the country. The program, which operates year round, teaches parents, free of charge, how to choose the right child seat, how children should properly be positioned in the seat, and how the seat itself should be positioned in the car. United Automobile Insurance Group underwrites most of the costs of the program, including equipment and staffing.

"Those recent photos of Spears' infant son sitting face forward sent a chill down my spine," says Brian Hannigan, a registered nurse and Miami Children's Hospital Community Educator. "While she may not have been breaking the law, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends, at a minimum, that all children under 1 year old, or under 20 pounds, should sit in the back seat of a vehicle, in a child safety seat facing backwards to prevent serious neck injuries."

"Safety is our No. 1 concern," says Sandra Iglesias of United Automobile Insurance Group. "That is why we extend an invitation to Ms. Spears to come to our seat check station and learn how to properly protect her child."

The next date for the Child Safety Seat Check is on Wednesday, May 31, at the Miami Children's Hospital Employee Parking Lot, 3100 SW 62nd Avenue in Miami. Inspections will be conducted by appointment only from 10:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The last scheduled appointment is at 2:30 p.m. To assure a spot, please call 305-663.6800.

Not in Miami? Many hospitals and baby stores offer child seat safety checks. Call for details.
