Taking Precautions The NICHD recommends parents take the following precautions to help minimize SIDS risk factors: - Place infants to sleep on their backs – even at naptime.
- Do not smoke around infants.
- Do not smoke if you're pregnant.
- Place infants on a firm mattress.
- Remove soft, fluffy bedding and stuffed toys from infant's sleep area.
- Keep blankets and other coverings away from the infant's nose and mouth.
- Do not put too many layers of clothing or blankets on infants.
- Make sure everyone who cares for an infant knows that infants should be placed on their backs to sleep.
