Bubble Trouble

How to Control Baby's Gas

By Carma Haley Shoemaker

Pages:  1  2  3  4

Once Baby has been relieved, parents will want to prevent the gas from reoccurring. According to Prachniak, tips t prevent gas include:

  • If your breastfed baby seems bothered by a particular food that you are eating, do your best to avoid it.
  • When bottle-feeding, be sure to use a nipple that is neither too big (which can cause Baby to eat too fast) nor too small (which can cause Baby to gulp air).
  • Burp Baby every three to five minutes during feedings, or between breasts, to prevent gas build up and pain. (Most breastfed babies do not need to be burped, but some do. Watch for signs of discomfort, such as squirming and fidgeting.)
  • Baby is sure to have a full tummy after feedings, so avoid jostling or vigorous playing for at least 20 minutes.
  • Encourage quiet time after your baby eats, as it will help Baby's system to digest and prevent upset stomach and/or gas from developing.
  • Avoid feeding your baby cow's milk, as it can cause gas.

Gas Pains and Babies by Anonymous on 02/12/2010 03:16PM

My 10 week old has been suffering from birth as well. Nothing we try works. I haven't tried Mylicon but may have to. Our pediatrician tells us it will eventually go away but it is so hard to see him suffer as it affects his sleep. I too am worrying there is something more going on. We may have to take him to a GI specialist. Hillary, anything work for you yet?

My infant is 7 weeks old. She has had terrible gas since about week 3 My concern is that nothing seems to work and she continuously, at times will be wrenching in pain and crying out. When it is bad this will occur every fewseconds or minutes and can go on for several hours i have tried gripe waters, mylecum, and now zantac for acid reflux.Normal burping techniques are not working either. I am concerned that it may be symptomatic ofsomething larger.Any thoughts would be appreciated hillabouttown@yahoo.com
