Unique Ways to Announce Your Pregnancy

News of a successful adoption can be just as special and surprising as the revelation about a pregnancy.

"I never did get the opportunity to tell my husband that 'we' were pregnant, but I tried my best to keep our adoption referral a secret," says Kathryn Marion Meyer of Erie, Colo.

When a child has been matched with a family, the couple receives an adoption referral. Kathryn and her husband, Mark, are the proud parents of four daughters adopted from China: Sarah, Libby, Abigail and Rachel. "When we were adopting the first time, I asked the agency director – who had become a friend – to let me know at home when our referral came in so I could surprise my husband," Meyer says.

As it turned out, Mark was at the agency office working on the computers when the scoop about their referral came in. "How they managed to not let the cat out of the bag when he was only a few feet away, I'll never know," Meyer says. "I gathered up champagne and flutes, plus the mandatory camera and drove to the agency's office."

She managed to sneak into the office and pick up the envelope containing their daughter's picture and basic information. When she found Mark, she told him that his daughter was ready to meet him. "His eyes glazed over as he tried to figure out how he could possibly have missed what was going on all around him that afternoon," Meyer says. "Tears of joy were flowing like rivers from us and the other couple who also got their referral. Their daughter and ours were crib mates at the orphanage; they're now honorary cousins."

When they took note of their daughter's birth date, they were a bit disappointed to learn they had missed her first birthday. But once they further deciphered her birth date, they figured out she was born on the precise day they had begun the paperwork to adopt her. "It doesn't get any better than that," Meyer says.

When my husband & I bought our house, he wanted to put up a basketball hoop. I told him he had to wait until we had kids. He responded jokingly that the minute he found out we were expecting he would go buy one. The day I found out we were pregnant I went out & bought him a basketball. The look on his face was priceless & his comment was, "really, you are?" Best day ever!!

We announced our pregnancy at the family Christmas at my husband's mother's house by putting the possitive test in a bracelet box & wrapping it like a present with her name on it. You should've seen the look on her face!

I am pregnant, and I am planning on telling my husband the good news in a special way. I have decided to purchase a pair of the little baby shoes and place them next to my husband shoes along with a little shirt & pants that I will hang right next to his suit. Let's see if that is a big enough clue that we are expecting. I can't wait to see his reaction. We have been waiting so long for this day.
