Baby's First Meals
Choosing the Best Formula
By Ginny Hermann

Hydrolyzed-protein
Some babies are found to have a severe protein sensitivity due to colic or food allergies. In these cases, a hydrolyzed-protein formula may be suggested as an alternative to iron-fortified and soy formulas. These formulas are milk-based, but the proteins are predigested, making them less likely to cause an allergic reaction. "Since these formulas are predigested, they go through the body very quickly," says Dr. Sinh-Dang. "There isn't time to cause a reaction." Katie Gustafsson, of Eskilstuna, Sweden, suspected problems with her son's digestion and asked his pediatrician to try a hydrolyzed-protein formula. "The doctor said it wouldn't work, but I insisted he come up with some answers to Jake's digestion problems because he was in constant pain," says Gustafsson. Her mother's intuition was right -- the new formula was just what Jake needed. "Within 24 hours, we had a different baby," explains Gustafsson. "Our little boy was no longer straining with the pains in his tummy. He had no problems adjusting at all." Because of the extensive processing these formulas require, hydrolyzed-protein formulas are significantly more expensve than the other types. "The new formula was expensive, $17 per can, but it was worth every cent to see our son calm and smiling," says Gustafsson.Want to see more?
