Brain Builders
Stimulating Activities for Your 6-month-old Baby
By Tammy Morey
A baby went to Dover
She came to a wall –
Whoops, she jumped over!
Place Baby on her stomach. Kneel down behind her, and while leaning over her, clasp her upper thighs and hips. Make sure that her hands are about shoulder-width apart and that she keeps her arms straight as you begin to lift her off the floor and say, "Whoops, she jumped over." She will be supporting her torso on her hands (this looks like a "human wheelbarrow" position, but do not lift her hips any higher than the height of her shoulders, always supporting her stomach and hips as you lift).
Hold the position for four seconds, and then lower her back down to the floor. Repeat the exercise five times with rests between the sequences. As she becomes stronger, you can hold her thighs, but always remember to make sure her back does not sag. (This indicates that she does not have the strength yet to maintain her body weight, and she could strain her muscles.) If at any time her back sags, go back to supporting her hips and stomach until she has developed enough upper body strength.
Brain-building skills: balance, trust, strengthens arms, back, and pectoral muscles, upper-body strength, bilateral coordination, body awareness, gross motor skills, emotional development and social development.

Thank you for a great article. I went on to read everthing pertaining to babies in their 1st year. You've given me such good ideas to communicate to my 7month old niece.
