Your Baby's Birth on Video

"A taped delivery becomes documentation that may be misinterpreted by an untrained eye," Dr. Torbati says.

Accept "No" For an Answer?
Parents-to-be are free to choose a health care provider and facility with open views on video cameras and other personal birth choices. But should parents lobby to require all medical professionals and facilities to allow videotaping of births?

"There are competing rights of the patient and the practioner," Moore says. "That right needs to be respected."

Memories Revisited
Deborah from Northern Ireland regrets the fact that she doesn't have a videotape of the birth of her sons. When her first child was born, she and her husband had a video camera, but they didn't tape the birth. "I truly wish now that we had so that my son could see how much joy his birth brought us, in particular my husband, who is usually quite undemonstrative. He was sobbing and saying 'It's a boy, honey, it's a boy,'" Deborah says.

"You wouldn't believe what you forget about your labor and delivery!" Sara says. "I watch my video and say, 'I don't remember that.' I cry every time I watch my video. There is nothing like seeing your child take that first breath of air."
