Benefiting from the Bradley Method
'Intervention' Is Not a Naughty Word
By Joe Cooke
Looking Back
Shelby and Guy were the only members of our Bradley group that had a completely natural birth. Jim and Lorna ended up having a Caesarean, and although Hiebert enjoyed a model Bradley birth with her first child, her second experience started with an amniotic fluid leak that sent her to the hospital before she was ready to labor. After 36 hours of hospitalization with no active labor, she finally asked her midwife to break the bag of waters so the baby's head could engage. The rest of the labor and birth progressed without medical intervention. Our experience with Katie prompted us to strive for a natural childbirth with our son, Carter. However, at two weeks overdue, Dr. Prescott urged us into the hospital, and my wife's labor was started with Pitocin. After a long labor, Carter's head finally popped out but his shoulder got stuck. I could feel the tension in the room as Dr. Prescott halted everything with a quiet command and a tense look. He performed a quick episiotomy and slipped our son free. Once again we were thankful for his presence, and we were glad that intervention was not a naughty word.
