A Better Bed Rest

Tips and Advice for Surviving Pregnancy Downtime

Christine D'Amico, author of The Pregnant Woman's Companion: Nine Strategies That Work to Keep Your Peace of Mind Through Pregnancy and into Parenthood (Attitude Press, 2004), agrees.

"The best thing you can do right now is practice personal acceptance of what is," says D'Amico. She recommends the following techniques to help respond to the challenge of bed rest:

  • Gripe about it. "Talking about how it feels can bring support of others and minimize that alone feeling," D'Amico says.
  • Stop the struggle and start the acceptance. "It is the simple act of acceptance that will lighten your load and give you a feeling of personal peace."
  • Give in to your body's demands. D'Amico's advice here is simple: Listen to your body and give it what it needs, she says.
Delegate, Delegate, Delegate!

One thing every pregnant mother who is relegated to bed rest needs is help with the family's daily routine. Even if she doesn't have any other children, she cannot keep the household running without assistance. Husbands or partners need to step up and take over household chores.

When friends and relatives ask if they can be of any help, take them up on the offer! Christina Lorenzen of North Babylon, N.Y., did just that when she was on bed rest during her pregnancy.

"When my huband wasn't able to be home, my mom would drive in to take care of me and my 2-year-old son," Lorenzen says. "My husband's grandmother came in and made tea and helped with laundry. Plus, a cousin spent a few nights when my husband worked night shifts."
